31 Days of Halloween challenge

Description

WOW it's been a crazy couple of months!  Sorry for my lack of activity, but I should have some time to post some things pretty soon since I'm off school next week!

If you follow me on Tumblr you were probably assaulted by my terrible doodles all October as I attempted the 31 Days of Halloween Art Challenge.  The challenge was to draw one thing per day based off of a one-word prompt.  I sort of succeeded!  Here are all the ones I didn't entirely hate, because what better time to post Halloween-themed stuff than 41 days after Halloween? >A>
(Actually I did try and post this in early November but the file refused to upload and I got so fed up I stopped trying for a couple weeks)

Top to bottom, left to right:

Day 3 -- pumpkin
Pumpkin monsters happen when lightning strikes a pumpkin patch during a full moon. It's true.

Day 4 — treats
Juno loves handing out candy on Nightmare Night, but she can never seem to resist eating one or two pieces before the fillies and colts arrive.  You know.  Quality control.

Day 5 — tricks
It is a little-known fact that gargoyles adore sweets, and Halloween is the one day a year when young gargoyles can explore the city without being noticed.
For some reason, most parents won’t believe their kid when she tells them one of her fellow trick-or-treaters is actually a magical creature and really shouldn’t be eligible for free candy.

Day 8 — black cat
The fabled Cat of Hawkshead is said to inhabit the town’s cemetery, with reported sightings dating back to 1592.  It appears only to those in great distress, and those who have seen it have claimed that despite its foreboding appearance, the cat emits a calming aura.  Though it never strays too close to the living, it will follow its chosen companion until they leave the boundaries of the cemetery.  All attempts to seek out the cat have failed and it disappears if approached, suggesting that its disposition is more or less typical of an average house cat.
The cat has never been seen exhibiting aggressive behavior; however, since the cat’s first sighting, the cemetery has been suspiciously devoid of theft.  Several would-be grave robbers in the mid-17th century were found in the cemetery cowering behind gravestones, babbling incoherently and covered with severe burns in the shape of claw and teeth marks similar to those of a small feline.
Descriptions of the cat have been inconsistent, with the only unanimously agreed upon traits being that the cat appears mostly feline, glows like a candle, and is always veiled in a shroud of fog.

Day 19 — eyeballs
This year will be Belladonna’s first at Telliwick Memorial Academy.  She’s nervous; even more so because she had to get glasses over the summer, and attending middle school is daunting enough without the nickname “sixteen eyes” following you around.

Day 10 — arachnid
Juliette and Anastasia are learning about tea etiquette.  Anastasia has a bit of trouble with the cups sometimes, but Juliette is confident that by the time they’re invited to a real tea party, she’ll have it well figured out.

Day 13 — spirit
The mysterious mistrals of the Hithean wilds don’t appear aggressive upon first impressions, and they do in fact seem quite amicable — until they try to rip your heart out.  Mistrals use the organs of humans to power their magic and stay alive, and without a steady supply of said organs, they will melt or fall apart, so they hunt almost constantly.
It has been said by some that all cold winds are caused by mistrals flying about unseen, but the arrival of a billowing wind when the air was previously still almost always means there’s a mistral afoot.

Day 15 — black
All down the church in midst of fire, the hellish monster flew, and, passing onward to the quire, he many people slew

I’ve always loved the legend of the Black Shuck, and as soon as I saw the prompt I knew I’d be using it as an opportunity for some much-overdue fanart.

Day 18 — cauldron
It is a common mistake among rookie adventurers to assume that the well-disguised monsters known as Mimicks only take the form of treasure chests, when in fact several dozen varieties have been classified.
This assumption has led to innumerable lost fingers, arms, legs, and heads.

Day 20 — monster
Peeps is what most other monsters would call a Very Bad Monster.  She’s not scary, not even vaguely threatening, and she doesn’t scare or trick people.  They’re even pretty much guessing that Peeps is a she — the only sounds she ever makes are ambiguous chirping noises.
If it weren’t for her weird and kind of creepy hobby of collecting pinatas and the fact that she makes really great punch, Peeps would be out of the monster club for sure.

Day 22 — poison
Pietro has had it up to here with these ridiculous attempts on his life.  He doesn’t ask for much — a few crumbs now and then is all a wood mouse needs, but the man of the house has decided to instead try every available method to kill poor Pietro.  First traps, then the cat, then poisoned food?  Today Pietro decided enough was enough and paid a visit to the local apothecary.
Let’s see how Lord Brickleband likes rat poison when it’s in his morning tea.

Day 25 — slime
It was once thought that the Melting Marsh of Uire was nothing but a toxic pit of disease and deadly creatures that should not be.
Roan Calpad, author of bestiaries and travel guides for nearly every region of the world, never believed this, and she was determined to prove there was something good in the marsh.  It took several weeks of careful observation and searching, and what she found wasn’t exactly what she had expected, but it was pretty adorable, if a bit messy.
She named the species “mud kittens”.

Day 26 — demon
When the hellhound snuck out of the Underworld to check things out on the surface, there was one thing he didn’t count on.
Terryfing tiny hissbeasts.

Day 27 — reaper
Though many legends of the Grim Reaper exist among humans, the animal equivalent is universal, and seen more as a mysterious entity than a terrifying and unstoppable enemy.

Day 30 — undead
The Melting Marsh of Uire is home to infinite horrors, arguably the worst of which being the infamous plague bear.  No one is quite sure how these monsters came to be, but it is thought they were once living creatures infected by the deadly spores of the marsh’s towering mushrooms.  Their hard, cracked hides constantly bleed viscous black slime, spreading spores wherever they go.  Not only is their blood deadly to humans, but plague bears are extremely territorial, running down and killing any creature they find trespassing.
Plague bears are one of many reasons the Melting Marsh would make an unfortunate setting for a vacation home.

You can see all the rest of these over on my Tumblr!  Cheers ~
